🚨 E-SCOOTER SAFETY REMINDER 🚨 |
||
|
We are seeing an increase in the use of privately owned e-scooters across our communities and would like to remind everyone of the law.
A privately owned e-scooter is classed as a motor vehicle/mechanically propelled vehicle, similar to a moped, and is therefore subject to road traffic legislation.
You can ride a privately owned e-scooter on private land with the landowner's permission.
It is illegal to ride a privately owned e-scooter on a road, pavement, cycle path, park, or any area to which the public has access, including supermarket, retail, and shop car parks. An e-scooter is treated as a motor vehicle. If you injure someone through your riding, you could face the same serious offences and penalties as a car driver, including offences relating to careless or dangerous driving.
If a rider is stopped using a privately owned e-scooter in a public place, they may be committing offences including driving without insurance.
Police can: 🚔 Seize the e-scooter under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act
Parents and young people please take note: Even if a rider does not yet hold a driving licence, any penalty points issued can be added to their driving record and may impact them when they apply for a provisional or full driving licence in the future.
✅ Privately owned e-scooters are legal to own and purchase.
Please help keep our roads and pathways safe for everyone by ensuring e-scooters are used legally and responsibly.
